What is the minimum deposit?
In order to be able to open a securities account, a minimum deposit of 2,000 Dollars (or equivalent in another currency) is required. Alternatively, such a securities account can also be opened by a transfer of securities (total value at transfer: at least $2,000).
Is there a deposit guarantee?
There is a deposit guarantee. The deposit is held at Interactive Brokers U.K. (IB UK). IB UK is a sister company of Interactive Brokers LLC (IB), a Nasdaq-listed company (symbol: IBKR), which has been active in the financial world for more than 33 years and pursues an extremely conservative business policy.
IB employs more than 800 people worldwide, settles more than 1,000,000 transactions daily, and has equity of USD 5 billion. IB was not directly affected by the financial crisis, as risky exposures in subprime loans and CDOs were consistently avoided. The company has been consistently profitable for years, even during the financial crisis. IB is subject to SEC and CFTC standards. IB UK is subject to FSA standards.
All customer accounts are segregated accounts. These are accounts that are separate from the brokerage house accounts. Should a Broker become insolvent, the customer with a segregated account can still dispose of his money with the relevant Broker.
Customer funds and capital investments are also protected in three different ways:
Customer deposits are held in segregated accounts, which are kept strictly separate from IB’s equity. Claims on IB cannot, therefore, be extended to client funds.
In the unlikely event of IB’s insolvency, customer funds and financial instruments are protected by the US Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). The protection covers a maximum of USD 500,000 per client, including a maximum of USD 250,000 on cash deposits. In addition, IB has a policy with Lloyd’s that provides protection of USD 30 million per client (including USD 900,000 on cash deposits), with a total maximum of USD 150 million per claim.
In the event that there are positions in non-US index options, non-US index futures, metals, and cash positions in the UK account, customers can choose to take advantage of the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). This covers up to GBP 50,000 per client. However, if an offsetting procedure with the US SIPC is ongoing or has been completed, an offsetting procedure with FSCS may be rejected.
How is the account opened?
For opening a custody account, one has to follow the following next three steps:
- Fill in the securities account opening application
This can be conveniently filled out online.
- Signature and POSTIDENT
After authentication by POSTIDENT, the signed application form and the documents required to open a securities account will be sent to Lynx.
- Opening a securities account
As soon as Lynx has received the complete securities account opening documents, the securities account will be opened immediately via the online broker Lynx.
It is also possible to open up a demo account. For this, one must fill out a registration formula. Afterward, risk-less trading is possible.
What are the conditions and spreads at LYNX?
Both the conditions and the spreads at Lynx are good. For EUR/USD the spread starts at 0.1 pip.
The portfolio management and all services related to the portfolio are free of charge. Even securities trading by telephone is free of charge.
For German stocks, the commission is 0.14%. The minimum fee is USD 5.80. American shares can be traded from as little as USD 0.005 per share. Here the minimum fee is USD 5.00. The conditions for share trading on other foreign stock exchanges are also fair. In addition, there are no fees for dividend payments.
The conditions for foreign exchange are 0.4 pip * order volume. For currencies, in Euro, the minimum is 4.00 Euro. Options, as well as futures and future options in Germany, are at 2.00 Euro per contract. For futures in the USA, USD 4.00 per contract is charged. For warrants and certificates, the commission is 0.20% or a minimum of 8.00 euros.
How high are the levers and margin requirements?
Initial margin requirements for trading equity CFDs start at 12.5%. There is also no margin requirement.
When trading foreign exchange, you can trade with up to 40 times the stake. The margin requirement for the Dax Future, for example, is 13,491 Euro. The overnight margin requirement is 26,983 euros. Depending on the volatility, however, this is also adjusted accordingly and can therefore be higher on some days.
Is the final withholding tax paid automatically?
An extended tax deduction on investment income (§ 20 EStG) was introduced with effect from 1 January 2009. This means that a uniform 25% tax deduction is made on investment income in the form of withholding tax. In addition, 5.5% is calculated on the amount of the final withholding tax as a solidarity surcharge. Investment income is thus taxed at a “flat rate”.
In the case of LYNX, the settlement and payment of the flat-rate withholding tax is not carried out until 31.12. of a year and is carried out independently. The settlement is carried out independently via the individual income tax return. However, taxation is still at a flat rate and not at the higher income tax rate. This means that the accumulated trading profits are available for profitable reinvestment throughout the year. In this way, an additional leverage effect is achieved for your own securities account. This type of settlement via the income tax return is possible because the securities account is managed by Interactive Brokers UK Ltd. in England.
How do I make deposits and withdrawals?
Deposits and withdrawals are made quickly and easily via your own account management.
In order to make a deposit, a deposit note must first be set in the account management. Afterward, a deposit can be made. The deposit is usually credited to your own account after two working days.
A reference account must be saved the first time a payment is made. After that, a payout can be made at any time. As a rule, the transfer will be credited to your own current account within 1 to 3 working days. An insight into account management at Lynx and the possibility of deposits and withdrawals.
